Jazz is back on the tropical island of Penang from the 1st-4th December, with the always eagerly anticipated Penang Island Jazz Festival. Now in its 8th year, the PIJF will once again draw jazz fans from Malaysia and abroad to the beautiful grounds of the Bayview Beach Resort Hotel for a packed program featuring local and international jazz stars.
The main action takes place at the Jazz By The Beach stage. Some of this year's highlights include Penang's very own Fred Cheah, the Epsen Eriksen Trio from Norway, Yuri Honing Wired Paradise, Jiyoung Lee Quartet from Korea and UK stalwarts SHAKATAK, who grace the stage on Saturday 3rd, while on Sunday 4th festival goers can look forward to guitarists Ulf and Eric Wakenius, Swiss piano trio sensation Rusconi, and blues singer Nina Van Horn.
Fringe stages at various locations on the island will host 15 Malaysian bands, and in addition to the feast of music there will be workshops, jazz gallery exhibitions, and the Island Jazz Foruma panel discussion featuring international experts on jazz.
PIJF 2011 will kick off on Thursday December 1st with concerts of local bands at the Tropical Spice Gardenone of Malaysia's premier eco-tourism destinations, with over 500 varieties of tropical fauna and floraand at Penang's top jazz club, the G-Spot, where Indonesian trumpeter Rio Sidik leads his quartet.
