Jazz monsters spotted at the Freakin' Frog...

For all the hype about Vegas headliners, the neon names everyone knows, the town is truly overrun with less-well known, fabulous players and voices most often seen as tuxedoed sidemen and slinky backup singers. Real monsters; many renowned worldwide for musical skills you seldom see shining, upstage in the shadows. It almost seems as if Las Vegas takes that great talent for granted.

Often as not, their great passion (while not at the “office" doing their “day job") is jazz. Great Vegas jazz has a storied history, with guys who just happen to be playing in town showing up at local joints to wail when they're not on stage backing everything from the Rat Pack, to Celine and Cirque.

Trouble, as a jazz fan, is knowing who's going to be at which joint when. Freakin' Music at The Freakin' Frog changes that, with an ongoing series of jazz jams, concerts and shows presented by Michelob, set to showcase amazing Vegas jazz players and singers—like Skip Martin, John Nasshan & Quintessence, Janit Paige and Vernell Brown Jr.—doing what they do best. What's really cool comes when you see a familiar face at the Frog (someone you may have seen shopping at Smith's,) who turns out to be a fabulous performer or a jazz star you've always admired.

Tuesdays Freakin' Jazz is an open jam, a chance for artists to drop in and do what they do best, backed by a solid, versatile core jazz quartet under drummer Matt Murphy. Players from renowned bassist Brian Bromberg, to sax stars Brandon Fields, Manilow vocalist Kye Brackett and trumpet legend Walt Blanton have been on stage, showing the audience unleashed jazz, Vegas-style.

Fridays feature recording artists Vernell Brown Jr.... Brown brings cutting-edge keyboard sensibilities (think Chick Corea or Herbie Hancock) to a wide spectrum of jazz styles.

Wednesday is added, with jazz percussionist and KUNV Radio host John Nasshan Jr. bringing some of his favorites to the Freakin' Music stage at The Frog. The classic Monuments Trio, fronted by renowned trumpeter Walt Blanton, Nasshan on drums, and Nasshan's Quintessence rotate with an edgier mix.

Freakin' Music lets the Vegas jazz monsters loose three nights a week at Freakin' Frog, 4700 S. Maryland near Trop (facing UNLV.) And, there's never a cover charge to see some of the world's best jazz artists at the coolest joint in town. How's that for an economic stimulus?

Haven't found The Frog yet? It's a Vegas' Best. 1000 (!) beers in The Cooler. 600 whiskys (!!) in The Attic. And the best Freakin' Music in town on stage, all week. It's the kind of joint you've been missing since LA, Chicago or New York.

COOL. SMART. GROWN-UP FUN. JAZZ.

And, Monsters.
