The Jazz Bridge Second Thursdays Neighborhood Concerts Series at the Collingswood Community Center—East Collings Avenue in Collingswood, NJ—presents trombonist Clifford Adams on Thursday, January 8. Showtime is 7:30 p.m., tickets are $10/$5 for students, and are only available at the door. For info: 856-858-8914 or 215-517-8337.

Trombonist Clifford Adams began his musical career as a member of his junior high school choir. He soon switched to trombone under the tutelage of Tommy Gryce, and four years later, he did his first pro gig as a trombone player with a band called the VSQ’s. The next year, he was on the road with Patti LaBelle and the Bluebells. After studying theory at Trenton State College, he had the chance to sit in with a bunch of legends, including Sonny Stitt, Gene Ammons, James Moody and George Benson. Then his career really took off. Adams performed with the Thad Jones and Mel Lewis Jazz Orchestra, Duke Ellington’s Orchestra led by Mercer Ellington, Max Roach, and ultimately with Kool & the Gang, where his trombone solos on “Joanna” are still referenced today. Though closely associated with R & B, the playing of Clifford Adams is firmly grounded in the jazz tradition, which can be heard on his acclaimed solo CD debut, “The Master Power.”

Jazz Bridge, an award-winning nonprofit dedicated to assisting Greater Philadelphia Metro area jazz and blues musicians and vocalists in times of crisis, sponsors these neighborhood concerts throughout the region to keep the sound of Philadelphia alive.
