JAZZ AT THE CHIMES’ last concert of the new season will feature pianist and composer Marcos Silva - “Made in Brazil” on Sunday, November 18, 2012 at 2:00 pm at Chapel of the Chimes, 4499 Piedmont Avenue, Oakland.
Hailing from Rio de Janeiro, Marcos Silva was at the forefront of the Bossa Nova movement and has played with all the greats of Brazilian music. A keyboardist, composer, arranger, producer, and educator, Silva has served as music director, arranger, and keyboardist for Flora Purim, Airto, Toninho Horta, Paquito D'Rivera, Bud Shank, Ricardo Silveira, Dori Caymmi, Nana Caymmi, Danilo Caymmi, Edu Lobo, and more. He currently heads the Brazilian Department at the Jazzschool Institute in Berkeley, and has introduced hundreds of students to Brazilian jazz.
Silva, a native of Rio de Janeiro, will present original compositions that can be categorized as Brazilian jazz. His evocative pieces are harmonically rich, melodically intricate and rhythmically complex. An exciting and virtuosic pianist, Silva will be joined by Mary Fettig (Stan Kenton Orchestra) on saxophone and flute, Scott Thompson (Chico Pinheiro) on bass, and Phil Thompson on drums.
