New York, NY March 1, 2006 Jack Kleinsinger's “Highlights in Jazz," New York's longest running jazz series, is pleased to present The Ultimate Jam Session featuring drummer, Jimmy Cobb, pianist, Mulgrew Miller, saxophone and flute, David 'Fathead' Newman, trumpeter, Lew Soloff, trombonist, Steve Turre and tenor saxophonist Ernie Andrews. Originally scheduled to make his 18th Highlights In Jazz appearance the latin-jazz percussion master Ray Barretto, who passed away last month, will be celebrated and remembered at this concert.

In the spirit of Norman Granz's Jazz At The Philharmonic “Highlights in Jazz" continues the tradition with a sextet of jazz greats in The Ultimate Jam Session; the only time these greats will all be seen on one stage.

Drummer Jimmy Cobb, a longtime favorite of Highlights has appeared on numerous recordings including the legendary Miles Davis Kind Of Blue. He currently leads his own band Cobb's Mob and has just released a new recording for the Marsalis label.

Pianist Mulgrew Miller has worked with everybody from Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers, Woody Shaw's Quintet, Tony Williams and Betty Carter's group. He is one of the most in demand pianists on the New York scene and one of the most talented and inventive musicians of his generation.

The Texas saxophone legend David 'Fathead' Newman needs no introduction to jazz fans. His long association with Ray Charles, his many recordings for the Atlantic label, his bluesy, soulful sax has been heard on numerous recording for Aretha Franklin, Dr. John and many others.

The brilliant high-note trumpeter Lew Soloff has been featured in many settings from Blood Sweat and Tears, Gil Evans, George Gruntz's Concert Jazz Band, the Manhattan Jazz Quintet, Carla Bley, The Carnegie Hall Jazz Band and The Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra.

Steve Turre is one of the finest trombonists on the scene. Know to many from his TV appearances with the Saturday Night Live Band Steve has performed and recorded with Rahsaan Roland Kirk, the Thad Jones- Mel Lewis Orchestra, Dizzy Gillespie's United Nations Orchestra and many others. He is also credited with introducing the exotic conch shells to jazz. In 2005 he was the winner of both the Down Beat and JazzTimes Readers Polls for Best Trombonist.

The hard-blowing tenor-man Ernie Watts makes a rare New York City appearance. Influenced by John Coltrane Watts worked in the big bands of Oliver Nelson and Gerald Wilson, was a staff musician for NBC, performing with the Tonight Show Band on a regular basis and toured the world with Charlie Haden's Quartet West.

There will be special surprise guests on this show! All concerts will take place at the Tribeca Performing Arts Center (Borough of Manhattan Community College), 199 Chambers Street (between Greenwich and West Street).

The tickets are $30.00 and $27.50, for students. They can be purchased at the theater box office or by calling (212) 220-1460.
