Since 1995, IJS has hosted its monthly Jazz Research Roundtable meetings, which have become a prestigious forum for scholars, musicians, and students engaged in all facets of jazz research. Noted authors, such as Gary Giddins, Stanley Crouch, and Richard Sudhalter have previewed their works, as have several filmmakers. Musicians who have shared their life stories include trumpeter Joe Wilder, pianist Richard Wyands, guitarists Remo Palmier and Lawrence Lucie, trombonist Grachan Moncur III, and drummer/jazz historian Kenny Washington.

Jazz Dialogues: Intimate Improvisations:
Concerts will be held in the Dana Room, on the 4th floor of the John Cotton Dana Library, Rutgers-Newark, from 2:00 - 3:30 pm.

A concert series involving jazz duos/trios exploring the art of improvisation in an intimate setting, each performance includes an interview with the artists, conducted by a member of the IJS staff, as well as an opportunity for the audience to ask questions. This series brings to campus leading jazz performers:
Christian McBride
Born in 1972, McBride is one of the leading jazz bassists and bandleaders. While still a teenager, he recording with some of jazzs historic figures and has since gone on to become a leading composer and educator, as well as one of jazzs most celebrated instrumentalists. Co-Director of the National Jazz Museum in Harlem, McBrides extended works have been commissioned by Jazz at Lincoln Center and the NEA. From 2006 to 3009, he was Chair of jazz programming for the Hollywood Bowl and the Walt Disney Concert Hall.
Warren Vach:
A longtime New Jersey, resident, trumpeter/cornetist Warren Vach, born in 1951, has forged one of the most lyrical solo styles in jazz. Coming to prominence in the 1970s through his work with swing veterans such as Benny Goodman, Vach has defied stylistic labels. His many recordings include a recent, critically acclaimed release with the Scottish Ensemble; his 2004 CD “Dream Dancing" was awarded the “Grand Prix du Disc" by the Hot Club of France.
Anat Cohen:
Since arriving in New York in 1999, the Israeli-born artist has established herself as on of the primary voices on saxophone and clarinet of her generation. A prolific composer, he is conversant in a wide range of styles, including jazz, Brazilian choro, and tango. She has released four critically acclaimed CDs as a leader, and has led ensembles at major festivals and clubs worldwide. In 2007 and 2008, she won the Downbeat critics poll for rising star on clarinet, and was named “Clarinetist of the Year" in the 2009 Jazz Journalists Association Awards.
