On Friday, February 17th, with the flush of Valentine's Day still on their cheeks, the Hungry March Band will throw a RED BALL FOR ALL at CBGB's Gallery. Punctuated by two bouts of HMB's steamy brass battery, the Red Ball will feature POETS--Taylor Mead, Tuli Kupferberg, Celena Glenn, and Shappy Seasholtz--offering their sweetest (and dirtiest) verses; PIRATES--Jollyship the Whiz-Bang making their first NYC appearance since October; and PLEASURE--HMB's Pleasure Society will slide into the spotlight and treat us to a little something created especially for this event. And because this is a Red Ball for All, host Sara Valentine will invite audience members to the stage to offer their own songs of love during the HMB Open Mic!
The Red Ball for All is the second in a series of holiday-themed events at CBGB's Gallery hosted by the Hungry March Band; these events will be showcases of inspiration and collaboration, featuring well-known local acts, emerging performers, and unknown talents stepping up to the Open Mic. Each of these evenings will include a potluck open to performers and audience members alike. Combining performance and feast, these Hungry March Band events will feed two kinds of hunger: the hunger for art, and the hunger for food!
The HUNGRY MARCH BAND is a booming ensemble of up to 25 players--saxes, trombones, trumpets, and sousaphones, and percussion--joined by the Pleasure Society, a troupe of baton twirlers, hula hoopers and dancers. HMB has played recently at Joe's Pub, Galapagos, Zebulon, the Village Halloween Parade, and the New York Public Library (for an event hosted by The Paris Review). Recently, the band received a Chashama A.R.E.A. Award for rehearsal space, and is currently preparing original music for Clay McLeod Chapman's new production, junta high, which will premiere at P.S. 122 in March. JOLLYSHIP THE WHIZ-BANG is a massive live musical pirate puppet sea saga that was conceived in 2002 by Nick Jones and Raja Azar. Jollyship the Whiz-Bang has garnered praise in Time Out New York, New York Press, The Fader, and Vice. They have toured the U.S., Canada, Ireland (where they won 2nd place at the Dublin Fringe Festival), and Thailand. In 2005, they released their first album, Songs to Drown By, and recorded a DVD (forthcoming) adapting “Crabquistador," the latest episode of their saga.
TAYLOR MEAD is an infamous poet, performer, filmmaker, and former star of the Warhol scene. More recently, Mead appeared in Jim Jarmusch's Coffee and Cigarettes (2003). This year Mead will participate in the 2006 Whitney Biennial in conjunction with the screening of the new biographical film Excavating Taylor Mead (2005).
TULI KUPFERBERG is a poet, cartoonist, satirist, publisher, and co-founder of the legendary band The Fugs. His underground lit magazine Birth popularized several important Beat writers in the 1950s. His own books include Beatniks; or, The War Against the Beats (1961), 1001 Ways to Beat the Draft (1966), and Newspoems (1971). His most recent book is a collection of cartoons entitled Teach Yourself Fucking (2000).
CELENA GLENN is a spoken word performer and poet. She is a former host of the Nuyorican Poets' Caf, two-time National Poetry Slam Champion, and currently ranked second in the World Individual Poetry Slam. Celena is featured in Spoken Word Revolution, a new anthology narrated by the creator of the poetry slam, Marc Smith, and in Urban Scribe, a documentary about the lives of contemporary poets.
SHAPPY SEASHOLTZ is an award-winning slam poet who has toured with Lollapalooza, appeared on CNN, and performed at the National Poetry Slam, Chicago Comedy Fest (including the Neil Hamburger Show), Second City, Joe's Pub, and the Upright Citizens' Brigade. He has had two books published by Kapow! Press, including Little Book Of Ass, which won a Firecracker Award for best poetry in 2000, and has recorded a CD entitled Poet/Comedian/Asshole. He currently tends bar at the Bowery Poetry Club.
SARA VALENTINE (curator/host), besides performing with the Hungry March Band as a twirler and percussionist, is the host of Little Miss Big Mouth, a series of live variety/talk shows that have taken place in venues Downtown and in Brooklyn, and the curator of “Way the F**k Off Broadway," part of FEVA's annual Howl Festival. She occasionally appears on stage under the moniker Polly Mormon.
