Hollywood Bowl Season Announced

Gustavo Dudamel will make three appearances at the Hollywood Bowl this summer, marking the first time that he will conduct at the venue since “Bienvenido Gustavo" in October.

The season will also include performances by John Williams, Harry Connick Jr. and a production of “Rent."



Here are some more of the summer's classical-music highlights at the Bowl. The L.A. Philharmonic said it will finalize all Bowl events and details in early March.

--Opening night (June 18): Thomas Wilkins conducts the Bowl orchestra in a concert featuring fireworks.

--Independence day concerts (July 2-4): The L.A. Philharmonic and the U.S. Army Band perform a series of concerts along with special guest country musician Vince Gill.

--Handel's “Hallelujah" (July 6): The L.A. Philharmonic and the L.A. Master Chorale perform works by Handel, Vivaldi and Poulenc.

--Femi Kuti & the Positive Force, et al. (July 7): The concert, which also features Terence Blanchard with Lula Washington Dance Theatre, explores new work in Afrobeat music.

--A Beatles Celebration (July 9-11): The Hollywood Bowl Orchestra and a series of special guests will perform songs in honor of the Fab Four. [For the record, 6:31 p.m.: An earlier version of this post referred to the Fab Five. Obviously, we were counting that mysterious Fifth Beatle. But thanks to readers sanOnOfre and DP for pointing out the error of our ways.]

--Saint-Saens' Violin Concerto (July 13): The L.A. Philharmonic performs work by Saint-Saens, Ravel and Debussy. Concert master Martin Chalifour performs as soloist.

--Smokey Robinson (July 14): The King of Motown makes his Bowl debut in this concert featuring songs from his album “Time Flies When Youre Having Fun."

--Joshua Bell (July 15): The violinist performs Bruch's Scottish Fantasy with the L.A. Philharmonic. Also on tap: Mahler's Symphony No. 1.

--Bugs Bunny at the Symphony (July 16 and 17): Not just for kids, this concert series is a Bowl favorite celebrating some of Looney Tunes' favorite characters. This year, the series features new additions, including Tom and Jerry and other classic cartoons.

--All Mozart (July 20 and July 22): Nicolas McGegan conducts the L.A. Philharmonic.

--Dianne Reeves (July 21): The singer will perform specially commissioned arrangements for this night of jazz.

--Planet Earth Live (July 23 and July 24): Scenes from the BBC television series “Planet Earth" will be shown in high-definition on the Bowls big screen, accompanied by the L.A. Philharmonic conducted by film composer George Fenton.

--All Beethoven (July 27 and July 29): Pianist David Fray joins the L.A. Philharmonic.

--Smetana and Brahms (Aug. 10): Bramwell Tovey conducted the L.A. Philharmonic in works by Smetana. Also on tap: Brahms' Piano Concerto No. 1, with soloist Stephen Hough.

--Emanuel Ax (Aug. 12): The pianist performs Brahms' Piano Concerto No. 2 with the L.A. Philharmonic. Also on tap: works by Dvorak.

--Leon Fleisher (Aug. 17): The pianist performs Mozart's Piano Concerto No. 12 with the L.A. Philharmonic. Also on tap: Sibelius' Finlandia and Tchaikovsky's Symphony No. 4.

--Augustin Hadelich (Aug. 19): The violinist performs Mendelssohn's Violin Concerto. Also on tap: Works by Dvorak and Brahms.

--Tchaikovsky Spectacular with fireworks (Aug. 20 and 21): The concerts will feature Tchaikovsky's 1812 Overture and Violin Concerto.

--Leonard Slatkin (Aug. 24 and 26): The conductor will lead the L.A. Philharmonic with violinist Sarah Chang and flutist James Galway.

--The Chemical Brothers (Aug. 29): The Bowl will turn into an electro-beat dance party when the English duo perform a series of live sets.

--Daniel Mueller-Schott (Aug. 31): The cellist will perform Elgar's Cello Concerto with the L.A. Philharmonic. Also on tap: Beethoven's Symphony No. 7 and Wagner's Meistersinger Prelude.

--Candide (Sept. 2): The L.A. Philharmonic will perform Bernstein's opera under the baton of Bramwell Tovey. The cast will be announced on a future date.

--The Big Picture: The Films of 20th Century Fox (Sept. 5): The Hollywood Bowl Orchestra performs scores from some of the studio's best-known pictures.

--Alexander Gavrylyuk (Sept. 7): The pianist performs Tchaikovsky's Piano Concerto No. 2 with the L.A. Philharmonic. Also on tap: pieces by Tchaikovsky and Borodin.

--Diavolo (Sept. 9): The L.A.-based dance company performs a newly commissioned work set to the music of John Adams. Also on tap: Stravinsky's Firebird Suite.

Separately the Dave Matthews Band announced a summer tour Tuesday that includes a stop at the Bowl on Aug. 23.
