Hilary Noble & Rebecca Cline “Enclave" CD Release Performance 3rd Annual Nuyorican JazzFest San Juan, Puerto Rico Sunday, Nov. 20, 2005

“Enclave", the first collaboration of Boston-based saxophonist Hilary Noble and pianist Rebecca Cline, is one of the most exciting new artist discoveries in contemporary Latin jazz. Their dynamic quartet combines rhythms from Cuba, Brazil, Argentina and North America with bop, jazz rock fusion and free jazz, in eight originals and a Cole Porter standard. Hilary studied saxophone with Yusef Lateef, and Rebecca piano with Joanne Brackeen and Chucho Valdes.

Here's a fine modern Latin jazz record, one that owes a ton to contemporary Cuban jazz playing. Cline, the pianist in the group, and Noble, the saxophonist and percussionist, float over the electric bass of the bassist Fernando Huergo; they work through montunos, and even take on a standard -- You'd be so Nice to Come Home To -- that isn't Night in Tunesia, or Take the A Train. The writing from the group is uniformly excellent, and the recording is unquestionably a hint of what's to come in jazz. Editor"s Pick: Descarga.com Highly Recommended. (Peter Watrous, 2005-09-22)
