As part of its ongoing Artist Showcase series, Ryles welcomes back the Greg Loughman Trio with special guest, 2008 Downbeat Student Music Awards' “Best Jazz Vocalist" Aubrey Johnson, Tuesday August 4, 8:30pm ($7 cover).

Bassist Greg Loughman once again steps into the bandleader role for another appearance at Ryles. A year ago almost to the day, Loughman held a CD release party at Ryles of his current CD, Sinistral, which features original compositions and original settings of traditional standard jazz songs. Since that time, the CD has garnered praise from press “Everything here is rendered with an eye on the composition and with a strong sense of trio interplay. Quite nice." -Cadence, as well as fellow musicians “I love the sound of this group, it’s modern, it’s intimate, it’s harmonically rich; it’s got everything." --Jerry Bergonzi.

This time at Ryles, Loughman shares the stage with a stellar cast of musicians who will each bring their unique musical personalities to the performance. Filling out the trio will be Brian Friedland on piano and Austin McMahon on drums. Since arriving in Boston to attend New England Conservatory, Friedland has quickly established himself as a rising star in the Boston jazz community for his sensitive yet muscular piano playing to his strikingly beautiful compositions, which have been featured at venues such as the Lima Jazz Festival in Peru, and as a finalist in the American Pianists Association Cole Porter competition. McMahon, in addition to being one of the most in demand drummers in the Boston area, has garnered praise (including an Editor's Pick, 5-star review from CDBaby) for the original compositions on his CD, Many Muses.

Joining the trio will be one of Boston's best young singers, Aubrey Johnson. A recent graduate of New England Conservatory (where she received the prestigious “Best Jazz Vocalist" 2008 DownBeat Student Music Award), Johnson has performed at venues including Carnegie Hall, Jazz at Lincoln Center, and Alice Tully Hall, and shared the stages with performers such as Bobby McFerrin, Janis Siegel, and Fred Hersch. In addition, Johnson can be heard leading her own group as well as with the Guy Mendilow band.

The performance at Ryles Jazz Club in Cambridge, MA Tues. Aug 4th at 8:30 will feature the compositions of Loughman, Friedland, and McMahon, as well as standards arranged to feature Loughman on bass and Johnson on vocals.
