Greenbox Energy-Monitoring Tech Starts Trials

For most people in the US, there's no easy way to ascertain why the power bill is so high. There's a meter outside the house or in the basement that measures energy consumption, but why it reads the way it does remains a mystery, as do techniques for reducing those bills. But power doesn't need to be this complex, and Greenbox is just the company to make it all understandable.

Greenbox was started by Jonathan Gay and Robert Tatsumi, the inventors of the ubiquitous Flash multimedia technology. The company provides utilities with a Web-based interactive energy management platform that they can then deploy to residential customers. Using smartly designed interactive online tools supplied by Greenbox lets people understand how and when they are using energy. Tools include custom usage analysis, historical visualizations of energy use and email reports and alerts. According to Gay, “Just as Flash enables hundreds of millions users to experience multimedia on the Internet, Greenbox enables households to experience and understand their energy usage in ways never before possible."

Last week, the company announced the first trial of its technology, in partnership with Oklahoma Gas and Electric (OG&E). Deploying an advanced power infrastructure isn't a simple thing, of course. Greenbox worked closely with Silver Spring Networks, which provided the network infrastructure, data collection, and integration via its Smart Energy Network. According to the company, “the web-based platform receives, displays, and analyzes 15-minute interval data for each home every day on a continual basis. Households simply need to log into the website via their browser to understand how and when they are using electricity."
