The jazz community has, too often, endured bad news. This sad reality recently manifested in the deaths of legends James Moody, Lena Horne, Billy Taylor and Buddy Collette, among others. The loss of the music's great instrumentalists and vocalists to the ravages of time and disease is, of course, inevitable, though no less painful.

Like these beautiful and talented human beings, night clubs and jazz radio stations, too, have come and gone. The Three Deuces, Birdland, the Village Gate, the Blackhawk, the Club Alabam, KJZZ, KKGO...all of these lost jewels kept alive in yellowed scrapbooks and dimming memories.

Well, for a change, there is some good news to share.Though it has been more than a year and a half since the Jazz Bakery was forced to close its doors in order to make room for a “desperately needed" furniture store, thanks to the tireless and unceasing efforts of Ruth Price and her devoted supporters, the Jazz Bakery will rise again. Last week, Ms. Price announced that, thanks to a $2 million grant from the Annenberg Foundation, as well as an agreement with Culver City to develop a space next to the Kirk Douglas Theater, the Jazz Bakery will reopen sometime in 2012!

Until then, jazz lovers can support the Bakery by attending Ms. Price's “Movable Feasts," the series of jazz concerts she continues to produce at various venues around town in order to keep the Jazz Bakery name alive.

Upcoming events include a performance on February 4, 9pm at the Musicians Institute Concert Hall by the Ethnic Heritage Ensemble with master percussionist Kahil El'Zabar, saxophonist Ernest Dawkins and trumpeter Corey Wilkes. And in celebration of Valentine's Day, Friday February 11 at 9pm, also at the Musicians Institute, vocalist Tessa Souter will sing songs of love.
