The Chicago Symphony Center Presents series of outstanding world music concerts brings legendary Brazilian singer-guitarist Gilberto Gil to Chicago for his Symphony Center debut on Friday, April 2, at 8 p.m. In this special program, entitled “The String Concert," he is joined by his son Bem Gil (guitars) and cellist Jaques Morelenbaum, and together the trio re-imagines acoustic interpretations of his enormous catalog.

Gilberto Gil has had led an acclaimed, four-decade career as a singer, composer and guitar player of both world and pop music. Known for the “Tropicalist" genre he introduced, alongside Caetano Veloso, he has recorded more than 30 albums, including six gold records and four platinum singles, with 5 million records sold. Gil's political and environmental activism gained prominence alongside his musical career and reached a new height in 2002, when he was appointed minister of culture for Brazil.

About the 2010 “String Concert" tour, Gil remarks: “The enchanted world of music is made of the miracle of meetings among creators. I have dedicated my life to meeting those with whom I can share my love of music and one day I had the pleasure of crossing paths with Jaques Morelenbaum. He has also dedicated his life to these encounters. We have had a few opportunities to meet and share our love of music together and with others. We are now going to be three: Jaques, myself and Bem, my son, who is starting his career and is in search of his own musical direction. It will for sure be a joy and a pleasure to play together and I will try to give to those who come to see us, an idea of the eternal miracle of the song."
