Composer, multi-instrumentalist and SWOJO director Daniel Barry premieres new music written during his recent three-month Fulbright residency in Brazil, Oct. 15, 8pm at the Royal Room (206) 906-9920. He performs with two bands. the Walk All Ways is Daniel Barry (trumpet), Jim DeJoie (woodwinds), Alicia DeJoie (voilin), Brad Hawkins (cello), Steve Rice (accordion), Chris Symer (bass), Scott Ketron (drums). The 2 Hemispheres group is Daniel Barry (keyboards), Kate Olson (woodwinds), Naomi Siegel (trombone), Chris Symer (basses) and Nonda Trimis (drums). Admission is $5-$15 suggested donation.

2 Hemisphere explores the relationship between composition and improvisation, classical, jazz, rock and world music styles, acoustic and electric sonorities, groove and drone functions, and individual versus collective expression. We cultivate the common ground between these seemingly parallel or disparate elements.

All members of 2 Hemispheres are fluent readers and improvisers versed in a wide range of musical styles balancing academic training with spontaneous expression. The color, texture and density of sound is of equal importance to the more traditional music parameters of melody, harmony and rhythm. We search for chordal and melodic structures that generate interactive overtones resonating sympathetically to create a musical language all their own. We explore the raw sensual power of groove, the hypnotic and transcendent effect of repetition, and the vibrations inherent in various non-tempered and quarter-tone tuning systems.
