Union County Performing Arts Center will present one of the most versatile masters of jazz piano. Fred Hersch will perform for one night only, on Sunday, April 3 at 6PM at the Fazioli Piano Loft at Union County PAC. Pianist and composer Fred Hersch has been called “one of the small handful of brilliant musicians of his generation" by Down Beat, and has earned a place among the foremost jazz artists in the world today. From the late 1970s onward, as a sideman to jazz legends including Joe Henderson, Art Farmer, and Stan Getz, he has solidified a reputation as a versatile master of jazz piano, as well as a relentlessly probing composer and conceptualist. Whether unaccompanied, in duo, working with trios and quintets, Hersch has explored the jazz tradition to its fullest, even as he opens new and undiscovered doors.

“Hersch has a track record for staying true to himself and making records that are worth listening to and owning."- David Zych, Jazz Times

“the most arrestingly innovative pianist in jazz over the last decade or so." —Tad Hendrikson, Vanity Fair

In late 2008, Hersch fell into a coma that lasted two months, could not swallow—or eat or drink—for eight months. During his recovery he was forced to re-learn all he had lost: how to eat, to walk, and to make music. Medical care, sheer determination and the miraculous spirit of the human body eventually helped Hersch battle back but, as David Hadju noted in an article for the New York Times Magazine, “he lost nearly all motor function in his hands and could not hold a pencil, let alone play the piano."In a remarkable testament to the human spirit, Hersch returned to solo public performance only a month after his rehabilitation. Two years later, his performances are as dynamic as ever.
