Smith's long and storied career as an acclaimed musician, award-winning composer and revered educator spans the past 40 years. An integral part of New Haven's creative music scene in the mid-1970's, and longtime member of the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians (AACM), he has appeared on more than 70 recordings, including 30 as a leader. His eclectic résumé includes collaborations with a long list of notable jazz figures, and he is currently a professor of music at the California Institute of the Arts, where he directs the MFA program in African American Improvisation.
