On Friday, November 16th, New Haven's Firehouse 12 will present a two set performance by the Andrew Rathbun Quartet. The group augments New York-based saxophonist/composer Andrew Rathbun's trio, featuring longtime collaborators bassist Scott Lee and drummer Jeff Hirschfield, with noted tenor saxophonist George Garzone. This configuration will be touring the Northeast in mid- November performing selections from its 2006 release, Shadow Forms (SteepleChase).

“There is a lot to like about Shadow Forms," wrote All About Jazz reviewer Ken Dryden, “as there are plenty of surprising twists within these intimate performances. This outstanding release remains fresh with each hearing, as new facets of these performances become apparent to the listener." The New York Times' Nate Chinen added, “Andrew Rathbun is a sure-footed tenor and soprano saxophonist, but it is as a composer that he makes his mark, especially when his music is entrusted to improvisers like his fellow tenor player George Garzone, a featured guest here."

A native of Toronto, Rathbun earned his Master's Degree from Boston's New England Conservatory, where he studied with jazz legends Jimmy Giuffre and George Russell among others, before joining the New York jazz scene. Since the release of his debut as a leader, 1999's Scatter Some Stones (Challenge), he has steadily earned a reputation for his ambitious recordings and “bold, imaginative musicianship" (David R. Adler, All Music Guide). Past projects have included music written to complement the poetry of Margaret Atwood and Cathy Song and original reworkings of pieces by composers Federico Mompou and Maurice Ravel. He has also composed music for the Danish Radio Jazz Orchestra and Brussels Jazz Orchestra, as well as commercials and film.
