Views from Cuba, Mexico and The United States

A film presentation from the Henry Medina Archives

A sixty minute film presentation of rare and unusual Cuban music footage from Son, Rumba & Afro Cuban Jazz from 1929 to 1960's, followed by a discussion with host and audience. This film presentation covers rarely seen footage produced in Cuba, Mexico and the United States. This is a short film examination presence of the African diaspora traditions in Cuban popular music.

Some of the highlight's will cover the early Cuban dance team Rene y Estela in Cuba and New York City, La Sonora Matancera, Miguelito Valdes, Benny More, Ninon Sevilla, Silvestre Mendez, a tribute to Arsenio Rodriguez and many others! Also, as a surprise... a film music tribute to (Macho) Machito (Francisco Raúl Gutiérrez Grillo, (February 16, 1908–April19, 1984).

In New York City, Machito formed the band the Afro-Cubans in 1940 with Mario Bauza as musical director, who brought together Cuban rhythms and big band arrangements. He made numerous recordings from the 1940s to the 1980s, many with Graciela as singer. Machito received a Grammy Award in 1983, one year before he died.

JUST ADDED: Mr. Vincent Livelli will be on hand providing a first hand account of his experience and observations of the pre-Mambo dance era of New York City. A forgotten period that, what is described today as “Salsa," was once known as “Rhumba." Including his perspective and account on the cuban dance team known as Rene y Estela, who taught local New Yorkers how to dance to afro-cuban dance music. Not only will you be able to witness Rene y Estela performing on film, but Mr. Livelli, who is in his early 90s, will bring them back to life with stories of his two mentors.

This film presentation has been organized with the help of *Mr. Richard Blondet and with the cooperation of The Nuyorican Poets Cafe. On Thursday, Sept. 20th, 2012. (One screening only)
