U.S. Tour Confirmed in Support of Critically-Acclaimed “jazz, JAZZ, jazz"

Concerts at New York's Iridium and Knickerbocker Jazz Clubs Set as Well

Jazz pianist Michael Wolff continues to earn raves for his Trio CD 'jazz, JAZZ, jazz'. Down Beat Magazine said the selections represent “Well-known material filtered through a post- bop prism. Wolff and his colleagues play with a breezy synchronicity." All About Jazz-NY buzzed that the collection is “...a percussive tour de force. The entire session has a calm, unhurried air that gives all three trio members plenty of room to stretch out. Together, Wolff and company show the kind of artistry that can result in a relaxed setting with no agenda, no pressure--just the goal of creating music." And JazzTimes Magazine, in their Summer Double issue, noted: “The band's goal was to have fun -- All of us do." “These tracks, finally now released, have the relaxed, nothing-to-lose attitude of the last set of a long gig..." DOWN BEAT MAGAZINE, 8/07 issue The CD features: “Well-known material filtered through a post-bop prism. Wolff and his colleagues play with a breezy synchronicity. When Wolff steers a solo toward a repeated figure or counter-rhythm against the groove, or breaks up his line into busy fragments, bassist John Williams and drummer Victor Jones latch onto it quickly and lay down their own variation or answer to this new input. This works especially well during some keyboard licks concocted in minor seconds on Wayne Shorter's “Footprints," in the form of a sweet snare crescendo from Jones." Critic Robert Doerschuk adds that Wolff “tends to syncopate against the pulse rather than surrender to or enhance it." With his thick, as opposed to intricate, chords, Wolff “falls closer in t his respect to Keith Jarrett than Herbie Hancock." DOWN BEAT MAGAZINE, 8/07 issue

ALL ABOUT JAZZ - NY, 8/07 issue Pianist Michael Wolff has had a career that can best be described as eclectic. Along with serious jazz stints with Cannonball Adderley, Sonny Rollins and Nancy Wilson, he's played with rocker Warren Zevon, explored world music, recorded an album as a vocalist and had a high-profile five-year gig as the bandleader on The Arsenio Hall Show. He currently produces and appears in a Nickelodeon series called The Naked Brothers Band, starring his two young sons. But as the title suggests, jazz, JAZZ, jazz is all about jazz. It was recorded in 2001 with longtime trio mates John B. Williams (bass) and Victor Jones (drums), and a program of free-wheeling takes on a set of standards and jazz classics by the likes of Wayne Shorter, Miles Davis, Herbie Hancock and Ron Carter. While the tunes are familiar, the group presents them in fresh, challenging versions. “Autumn Leaves" and “My Funny Valentine" are given barely recognizable, highly impressionistic treatments, with Wolff merely hinting at the themes with chords and brief runs of notes. His playing is more emphatic on “Solar" and “Footprints," while “Softly, As in a Morning Sunrise" is a percussive tour de force. The entire session has a calm, unhurried air that gives all three trio members plenty of room to stretch out. Together, Wolff and company show the kind of artistry that can result in a relaxed setting with no agenda, no pressure--just the goal of creating music. All About Jazz-NY, by Joel Roberts, 8/07

'jazz, JAZZ, jazz' is a nine-song collection of standards, including “My Funny Valentine," “Cry Me A River," “Autumn Leaves" and more. This soulful, instrumental album (which also features long-time band-mates John B. Williams on Bass and Victor Jones on Drums,) is everything fans have come to embrace in Wolff's virtuoso jazz piano playing. Wolff's rich history of collaboration was cultivated via work with such venerable artists as Cannonball Adderley, Cal Tjader, Nancy Wilson, Thad Jones-Mel Lewis Orchestra, Sonny Rollins, Wayne Shorter, Tony Williams, Christian McBride and many others.

Wolff was invited to perform with the legendary Nancy Wilson at her 'Swingin' 70th Birthday Party' at Carnegie Hall. Wolff's Carnegie Hall appearance reunited him with Wilson, for whom he was Musical Director and Arranger for many years.

Respected critic Howard Mandel recently commented: “Michael Wolff's music just gets better and better -- his straight-ahead piano trio album, following his crooner-at-the- keyboard success Love and Destruction, interprets choice standards by Miles, Dizzy, Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter, et al. with elegance, energy and nuance that establishes him in the first rank of urbane jazz pianists. The secrets he discovers in these familiar selections makes them, and us, feel a little more sophisticated. And what simpatico support from John B. Williams and Victor Jones!"

Laurence Donohue-Greene, Managing Editor of AllAboutJazz-New York, raved: “Without a doubt one of the strongest piano trio CDs I've heard all year..." Greene selected 'jazz, JAZZ, jazz' as one of his 'AAJ Recommended Listening' album picks for August.
