“A guitarist-singer-composer with a bright future"--Los Angeles Times

“This acoustic guitarist, singer, and composer is a one-man compendium of avant Americana"--The New Yorker

The Doug Wamble Quartet, featuring guitarist and vocalist Doug Wamble, brings its unique blend of jazz, gospel and blues to The Jazz Standard (116 East 27th Street) May 30 and 31, 2006.

The Doug Wamble Quartet will play cuts from its latest release, 2005's widely praised Bluestate (Marsalis Music), as well as new material from its upcoming release. Bluestate has been heralded for its organic synthesis of original material and covers (Peter Gabriel's “Washing of the Water," Stevie Wonder's “Have a Talk with God," and the gospel classic “Rockin' Jerusalem") as well as its variety of musical styles.

A native of Memphis, Tennessee, Wamble grew up on a steady diet of blues, gospel, country, r&b, bluegrass, rock and jazz. The Doug Wamble Quartet's albums reflect these diverse influences. Bluestate's sound was also inspired by the tour in support of their stunning debut, 2003's Country Libations (Marsalis Music). Wamble explains, “The experience focused us more in a jazz direction, but, in an odd way, it brought out the other eclectic stuff as well, all of the blues and gospel stuff. The road allowed the disparate elements to come together in a more cohesive way. We've melded my wild influences into something coherent."

The Doug Wamble Quartet will perform two sets, 7:30 pm and 9:30 pm, Tuesday, May 30 and Wednesday, May 31, at The Jazz Standard (116 East 27th Street). Tickets are $20 and available in advance online at http://www.ticketweb.com. To reach The Jazz Standard, call (212) 576-2232.

ABOUT THE DOUG WAMBLE QUARTET
The Doug Wamble Quartet, featuring guitarist and vocalist Doug Wamble, has released two critically acclaimed albums on the Marsalis Music label, Country Libations and Bluestate. Roy Dunlap (piano), Jeff Hanley (bass) and Peter Miles (drums) round out the group. The quartet has played together for over a decade. They met at the University of North Florida in the early 1990s, and regrouped three years ago to record Country Libations. Since then, the quartet has performed nationally and internationally, most notably at London Jazz Festival, the Berlin Jazz Festival, Tanglewood and the Monterey Jazz Festival.

Doug Wamble (guitar, vocals) hails from Memphis, Tennessee; his music-rich hometown is a constant inspiration for his genre-busting compositions. In addition to his two albums, he may be heard on Wynton Marsalis's Unforgiveable Blackness (Blue Note) and Big Train (Columbia Jazz), Cassandra Wilson's Traveling Miles (Blue Note) and Branford Marsalis's Romare Bearden Revealed (Marsalis Music).

Pianist Roy Dunlap is a native of Amherst, Wisconsin. He moved to New York City in 2000 and established himself immediately, performing notably with Wynton Marsalis and a variety of pop, jazz, funk and electronic acts both in New York and around the country.

A native of Daytona Beach, Florida, bassist Jeff Hanley has performed with jazz legends Bunky Green and Sam Rivers. He relocated to New York City in 2005, and is becoming a fixture on the Manhattan music scene.

Drummer Peter Miles is an exceptional performer whose sought-after versatility keeps him busy all over the world. He's worked with Clark Terry, Wycliffe Gordon, Marcus Roberts, Colonel Bruce Hampton, Eddie Daniels, Ellis Marsalis, Loston Harris and Mofro.
