Daniel Smith
Daniel Smith has had an illustrious career over the years showcasing the potential of the Bassoon in classical, jazz and crossover. With his many recordings and live performances, he has taken the Bassoon into uncharted territory with ground breaking and award winning albums.

Along with recording fifty concertos with orchestra, his albums featuring crossover, ragtime, bebop, swing, Latin, and now this unique Jazz Suite for Bassoon, have demonstrated just how versatile a bassoon can be, and performed at the highest level of artistry and virtuosity. To help with promotional & marketing costs, he has launched a Kickstarter Campaign, designed to increase the visibility of his new album.

With this release of Jazz Suite For Bassoon on the Summit label, Michael J West, in his liner notes, points out how this recording represents a ‘manifesto’ for Daniel Smith, a ‘vision of what’s possible on his too-often pigeonholed instrument’, and ‘a display of what Smith and the bassoon can do’. With future recordings in the pipeline showcasing the music of the great swing bands, as well as the music of Charlie Parker and his contemporaries, Daniel Smith has proven, and will continue to do so, what a bassoon is capable of doing in the hands of a master.of this instrument.

In 2015 and 2016, Smith will premiere in England the Blazing Bassoon Concerto for Bassoon, Jazz Trio and Orchestra by British composer Simon Proctor, along with Brazilian Jazz Concerto For Bassoon And Orchestra by Brazilian composer Joao Macdowell, with premieres to take place in Brasilia, Rio Di Janeiro and Sao Paulo. Further performances of these concertos, written for and dedicated to him, are being arranged with orchestras in the USA, Canada, Poland, and Costa Rica.

As the world’s most recorded bassoon soloist, and having performed over the years at leading concert halls, festivals and music series in many countries, Daniel Smith has been described in the jazz world as ‘The Charlie Parker of the Bassoon’, The Gerry Mulligan of the Bassoon’ and the ‘J J Johnson of the Bassoon’, and in classical music,’The Rampal of the Bassoon’ and the ‘James Galway of the Bassoon’. The NY Daily News described him as ‘The Greatest Bassoon Player of His Generation’.while JazzSeen in Portugal called him ‘The most important bassoon player of our time’ and with JazzWeekly describing him as ‘a force to be reckoned with in jazz!’
