"City of Dreams" at the Jazz Gallery November 12th

David Gonzalez & The Poetic License Band with Bobby Sanabria, John Di Martino & Greg Ryan

Wednesday, November 12; Sets at 9:00 & 10:30 PM

David Gonzalez' poems and stories explore the quest for Latino/American Cultural identity. Bobby Sanabria and The Poetic License Band create a “deep groove" by surrounding the text with ancient Afro-Cuban rhythms, modern jazz and funk. The band heats it up with a feast of drumming and percussion ranging from sacred Yoruba chants to mambo-flavored R&B.

“In The Poetic License project, post-9/11 New York finds an epic voice, Puerto Rican and Caribbean in genesis, but planetary in its affection and regard for humanity, a lyrical, Whitmanesque perspective on the human condition and the transformational twenty-first century that we call home." - ROOTS MAGAZINE

“Inspired and wonderfully evocative, delivering the best of the genres it touches while avoiding potholes common to spoken word and music efforts. Gonzalez is a Nuyorican Gill Scott-Heron but with his own distinctive voice." - THE ORANGE COUNTY REGISTER

“[An] extraordinary release. Gonzalez's commentary on the big city is at once cutting, reverential and deeply insightful. His words will resonate with a broad audience, while the music will keep hips swaying. Chalk up this release as one of the season's best." - HISPANIC MAGAZINE

David Gonzalez is a poet, guitarist, and storyteller. David and New York go together like arroz con pollo. He spent eight years as the co-host of WNYC's popular children's radio program, “New York Kids," and can still be heard on that station as an occasional commentator for “Studio 360." As the creator of stage shows such as “Sofrito," “Mytholojazz," and “Double Crossed," David has entertained audiences at popular New York locations such as the New Victory Theater, Lincoln Center, Brooklyn Academy of Music, Central Park Summerstage, and Aaron Davis Hall. Mr. Gonzalez' poetry was also featured on Bill Moyers' PBS documentary “Fooling with Words," as well as NPR's “All Things Considered." He has performed at venues like the Montreaux Jazz Festival, The United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, and the Smithsonian Institution. The Royal National Theater of London proclaimed, “Mr. Gonzalez is an artist of rare talent and warmth who held our sell-out audiences spellbound." He earned his bachelor, masters, and doctorate degrees from NYU and, in 1998, he was honored with the Helen Hayes Performing Artist of the Year Award.

Bobby Sanabria is a Grammy-nominated drummer who has played with some of the legends of Jazz and Latin music
