Jazz legend Dave Brubeck is recovering in a Connecticut Hospital after having a pacemaker installed Monday. Brubeck, 89, underwent surgery after complaining of fatigue and dizziness. Doctors concluded a pacemaker was necessary.
Because of the surgery, all of his performances for October have been canceled. Brubeck is expected to be released from the hospital this week and he is expected to resume touring in November.
“Dave's doctors are confident he will be rehearsing in a few weeks time and back on the road by next month," said Russell Gloyd, Brubeck's long-time producer and conductor. “I know he's anxious to perform again and hated to disappoint all his fans who were hoping to see him perform this month."
Brubeck is known for maintaining a rigorous concert schedule, performing at dozens of venues each year. His next concert is scheduled for Nov. 19 in Worcester, Mass., just three days after Sony Music is scheduled to release a two-CD set of his music titled “Legacy of a Legend." The next week the Concord Music Group will release their two-CD set, “The Definitive Dave Brubeck" which will cover his years at Fantasy (1949-1953), Concord (1979-1988) and Telarc (1993-2007). That will be followed by a concert in Rockport, Mass., and then three nights at the Blue Note in New York City. On December 16th he will be performing with The Cleveland Orchestra.
Brubeck, a 1942 graduate of University of the Pacific, has achieved extraordinary success throughout his music career, including the Dave Brubeck Quartet's highly acclaimed album “Time Out" (1959) which sold more than one million copies. During a career that spanned more than 60 years, he has fought for civil rights and used music to bring racial injustices into the national discourse. He has served as an artistic ambassador for the United States State Department.
Brubeck received numerous awards for his work, including the National Medal of the Arts presented by President Clinton, a National Endowment for the Arts Jazz Masters Award, the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award, the Smithsonian Medal, and designation as a “Living Legend" by the Library of Congress. In 2008, he was inducted into the California Hall of Fame alongside actors Jane Fonda and Jack Nicholson, and fellow musician and Honorary Board member of the Brubeck Institute, Quincy Jones.
On Dec. 6, 2009, his 89th birthday, Brubeck received the Kennedy Center Honor alongside musician Bruce Springsteen, actor Robert DeNiro, actor/writer/director Mel Brooks and opera singer Grace Bumbry. In April of this year, the U.S. House of Representatives passed HR 1283, which honored Brubeck for his work.
Currently, Academy Award-winning director Clint Eastwood and famed documentary filmmaker Bruce Ricker are finishing a film about Brubeck titled “In His Own Sweet Way," which will be shown on the TCM cable channel on December 6, 2010, Dave's 90th birthday.
