Cryptogramophone Records is a Los Angeles-based record label that prides itself on releasing state-of-the-art recordings of creative improvised music in beautifully designed digipaks.

Formed in 1998 by violinist/producer Jeff Gauthier, Cryptogramophone serves the needs of a community of creative artists committed to exploring the cutting edge of improvisation, composition, artistic vision, emotion, and musical innovation. Cryptogramophone is not only a record label, but an artist collective of sorts. Many leaders on the label appear on one another's albums and sidemen are often common from record to record depending on the nature of the group. Previous releases have explored jazz-folk, fusion, instrumental and experimental rock and more.

Some of the artists who are part of the Cryptogramophone family include drummers and percussionists Scott Amendola and Alex Cline; violinists Bobby Bradford, Mark Dresser and Jenny Scheinman; guitarists Nels Cline and Jeff Parker; cellist Erik Friedlander; reed players Ben Goldberg and Bennie Maupin; pianists Myra Melford, Alan Pasqua, and Alan Broadbent; accordionist Andrea Parkins and trumpeter Cuong Vu among many others.

CryptoNight History

For the past 9 years, Cryptogramophone has also curated an internationally acclaimed creative jazz and world music concert series in Los Angeles called CryptoNight. Until recently these performances were held at the Club Tropical. On Thursday and Friday nights, Gauthier and his associates presented jazz, creative music, and world music artists from all over the world.

It is in this spirit that almost the entire active Cryptogramophone roster makes its proverbial New York debut with CryptoNights at The Jazz Standard as a collective of artists who share an exploratory and open-minded approach to making music. The following are the scheduled performances to take place during the week of March 26 through April 1, 2007:

As usual, performances at The Jazz Standard will be at 7:30 PM and 9:30 PM unless otherwise noted.

This unprecedented collection of talents all under one roof could only happen as a result of Gauthier's artistic vision and leadership as a producer and The Jazz Standard's reputation as one of the most progressively-booked clubs in New York City.
