The 2007 Lionel Hampton International Jazz Festival marks a milestone Feb. 21-24 as it celebrates its 40th year of sharing the magic and spirit of jazz with new generations of students, teachers and fans.
The four-day event is a leading educational jazz festival and attracts more than 12,000 students from across the U.S. and Canada. The festival features student performances and concerts, workshops by jazz musicians, displays from the university's International Jazz Collections and nightly concerts featuring a host of world-class professional jazz musicians, including the Roy Hargrove Quintet, Jane Monheit, Wycliffe Gordon, John Pizzarelli and Grammy award-nominee Roberta Gambarini.
This year, the festival welcomes its new artistic director, John Clayton, and honors longtime executive director Lynn J. Skinner who retires after 36 years of leading the festival.
