Carolina Jazz Connection with Larry Reni Thomas at Jazz Speaks at UNCW

Jazz Speaks at UNCW (The University of North Carolina at Wilmington), a lecture series conducted by distinguished professor and master musician Joe Chambers, continues, with its second installment, February 15, 2009, at 7:30 p.m., at Beckwith Hall, in The Cultural Arts Building, at UNCW. The lecture will deal with jazz as social history and will cover the jazz experience of the 1940s and 1950s up to today s scene.



The lecture will also include an added attraction with a scholarly presentation by veteran, Chapel Hill, NC-based writer/radio announcer, Larry Reni Thomas, who will present his Carolina Jazz Connection, which highlights the fact that there seventy-five (75) jazz personalities who are native North Carolinians. Thomas, a native Wilmingtonian, who spent almost a decade (1984-93) hosting late-night jazz on Wilmingtons public radio station, WHQR-FM , has also produced a audio documentary on Shallotte native, Helen Morgan, who was married to trumpet sensation Lee Morgan.



He is presently writing a book on a jazz club where Lionel Hampton, Louis Armstrong, Count Basie, Duke Ellington and other popular big bands performed called The Barn: Wilmington, North Carolinas Jazz Mecca (1941-50). Carolina Jazz Connection with Larry Reni Thomas was recently presented in April 2008 at NAJRI (North Carolina Central University/African-American Jazz Caucus Jazz Research Institute) Jazz Conference.
