Artists featured at the 28th Cape May Jazz Festival, “Favorites Return" November 9-11, 2007

THE DUKE ELLINGTON ORCHESTRA
A prolific composer, Duke Ellington created over two thousand pieces of music, including the jazz standards “Take the A-Train", “It Don't Mean a Thing (If It Ain't Got That Swing)", “Mood Indigo", “Prelude to a Kiss", “Satin Doll", and many more. Ellington was showered with many honors, including the highest civilian award granted by the United States, the Presidential Medal of Freedom. No one in the history of jazz has created so personal an orchestral sound, and so continuously expanded the idiom. Opening the 28th Festival, Cape May Jazz is honored to present the Duke Ellington Orchestra, Friday November 9, at Convention Hall for two great shows, 8pm and 10pm!

PIECES OF A DREAM
In the world of jazz, there are only a handful of musical collectives who continue to explore and evolve beyond the years, eschewing fad and reaching for musical legacy. After more than thirty years, Pieces of a Dream remains a force in contemporary jazz. Founded in 1975 when the principal musicians were in their teens, jazz legend Grover Washington, Jr. recognized the talent and launched them to international success. Pieces of a Dream continue their smooth blend of Jazz, Funk and R&B at Cape May Convention Hall on Saturday November 10th, 8pm & 10pm!

FREDDY COLE
Freddy Cole doesn't apologize for sounding like his brother, Nat “King" Cole. Growing up in the light of his elder brother, Freddy has always been true to his own unique styling. His vocals - suave, elegant, formidable, and articulate - are among the most respected in jazz. “Freddy has an impeccable sense of swing... he is, overall, the most maturely expressive male jazz singer of his generation, if not the best alive." -- The New York Times. “Gorgeous autumnal baritone, expressive phrasing and pitch-perfect feel for jazz standards, pop tunes and love ballads." -- People Magazine.

HOUSTON PERSON
Houston Person is the natural heir to the “Boss Tenor" crown. In more than twenty-five years as a working bandleader, Person has taken his show to most points on the globe. This phenomenal musician plays his tenor among the stars and keeps getting better. One of the last proponents of the big sound, his sax tone has gotten bigger even as his delivery has mellowed. In addition to his natural jazz, Person has recorded disco and gospel, pop and R&B; with his enormous and ever changing song book, his live performances are anything goes!

ERNIE ANDREWS
When you experience Ernie Andrews you will understand why this gentleman stands tall with the great male jazz vocalists. He embodies the essence of the true jazz singers, with an air of swagger and chivalry. His saucy style, presence and manner reflect his debonair personality and life. You can hear the love and respect Andrews has for Duke when he performs the Ellington Tribute Medley: Satin Doll / I Got It Bad / Take The A Train. He brings these Ellington tunes to life like no other performer today accompanied by Bootsie Barnes, sax.

PAPA & JOEY DEFRANCESCO
According to festival co-founder Woody Woodland, “In 1981, Joey was the most precocious 9 year old we ever saw with such a mature touch on that B3 organ". Today, Joey's Hammond B3 mastery holds five consecutive DownBeat Critics Poll awards 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005 and 2006. With over 20 solo releases and historic associations with legends such as Miles Davis, Jimmy Smith, Bobby Hutcherson, Elvin Jones John McLaughlin, and his father, the great “Papa John", DeFrancesco's place in the B3 history is secure. Experience Papa John and Joey on 2 Hammond B3organs accompanied by Tim Warfield on sax.
