CAM Jazz Announces 2009 Releases by Martial Solal, Francesco Cafiso, Enrico Pieranunzi, Edward Simon, Kenny Wheeler and Antonio Sanchez

First Release of The New Year is Martial Solal's Live at The Village Vanguard on January 27

In the course of just eight years, CAM Jazz has become an independent record label of international prestige. Among the achievements in its eight years are four consecutive GRAMMY nominations (2006, 2007, 2008) for Kenny Wheeler, Diego Urcola, Paul McCandless and Mark Walker (both of Oregon).

On January 27, CAM Jazz will begin its new release season. By spring, the company will announce which, if any recordings, it will reissue in 2009 from the newly acquired Black Saint, Soul Note and DDQ (Dischi della Quercia) catalogues which feature Andrew Hill, Cecil Taylor, Dave Douglas, Anthony Braxton and the World Saxophone Quartet among other seminal players. eMusic, the world's largest digital retailer of independent music and the world's second largest digital music service, is the exclusive digital partner to Cam Jazz for access to these catalogues through the end of January.

Announced releases are:

JANUARY 27 - MARTIAL SOLAL, Live at The Village Vanguard

The pianist Martial Solal opened his week at the Village Vanguard on Tuesday night by rolling through tunes that jazz musicians have been amusing and sharpening themselves with for 50 years or more... One of the world's most imposing jazz musicians - being 80 has not dimmed his agility or his imagination - he interpreted each passing moment of the songs as a provocation: spinning out a quick cycle of chords from just one, or interrupting the shape of a melody to add on a whole new structure, invented at breathtaking speed... --New York Times

MARCH - FRANCESCO CAFISO QUARTET featuring Aaron Parks, Ben Street, Adam Cruz

Defined as the reincarnation of Charlie Parker, the Mozart of sax, a genius and a wonder boy, Francesco Cafiso is a natural. On his first CAM Jazz recording, Happy Times --the fourth in his young career-- he delivered a fearless free-flowing performance together with his quartet. On this new release, he again features all original compositions and adds to the musical impact with a high-wattage quartet of star players.

MARCH - ENRICO PIERANUNZI, Dream Dance (Marc Johnson, Joey Baron)

Born in Rome in 1949, Enrico Pieranunzi has long been one of the best-known and appreciated personalities on the European jazz scene. Pianist, composer and arranger, he has recorded more than 60 CDs as a leader in all formations: solo, duo, trio, quartet and quintet. He has performed in concert and/or recorded with Chet Baker; Lee Konitz; Paul Motian; and Charlie Haden among others, bringing him to the attention of American jazz fans and critics who have embraced his unique lyrical approach. Dream Dance features the trio he formed in 1984 with Americans Marc Johnson on bass and Joey Baron on drums.

MAY - EDWARD SIMON, Blossom (John Patitucci, Brian Blade)

Blossom is the follow up to Edward Simon's first recording for CAM Jazz, which was voted by Downbeat Magazine critics as the Best CD of 2007. A sublime pianist first recognized for his long partnership with trumpeter Terence Blanchard, Simon has great compositional skill and originality and is strongly influenced by his Venezuelan roots. He returns with his star trio.

MAY - KENNY WHEELER, Now and Now Again (Steve Swallow, John Taylor)

Kenny Wheeler's previous Grammy-nominated release for CAM Jazz, What Now?, may serve as the reference for this new title, Now and Now Again. In his 50-year career, Wheeler seems to always stay current by exploring new musical ideas and establishing long-term musical partnerships he can tap, such as here with Steve Swallow and John Taylor. His range and tones on both the flugelhorn and trumpet seem to always expand, and his brilliant compositions lead to recognition such as BBC's “Record of the Year" for What Now?
