The c/o pop Festival program for 2011 has Cologne, Germany wired from June 22-26 with abundant new music and the Creativity & Business Convention.

Entertaining energy will spark and flow from many diverse sources this week as c/o pop (Cologne On Pop) includes Europareise, an international network for festivals. With a general theme of unifying creative mediums and enhanced musical products, focus is on building a common ground for reaching consumers and sharing progress along the way.

Initially incorporated in 2004 as more exclusively an electronic music trade fair and showcase, c/o pop has seemingly evolved into more of a global forum. Technical and talent-based aspects of multi-national music marketing are covered.

The festival opens Wednesday night with the red hot Janelle Monae, in a scenic setting across the Rhine from historic Cologne Cathedral. Acts like WhoMadeWho and Ely Guerra spread the wealth around the central city area.

Philip Poisel, Paul Kalkbrenner, Wir sind Helden and Helmut Hattler top a five day bill that lists over 100 live sets. Informal, interactive settings are offered in numerous “club parties" around town that feature performers like Egyptrixx, GusGus, Motor City Drum Ensemble and Mathew Dear.

German showcases will feature some of the host country's brightest potential, with visiting nations also being represented. The “c/o panz" project aims at starting young, with a schedule that introduces children to musical concepts and instruments.

A festival foundation is the Creativity & Business Convention, which presents a well-balanced look ahead at the future of entertainment, media, marketing and the masses. This year's topics include digital business models, social media, web TV, commercial creativity, content rights and exploitations, developing economics, international opportunities and panels on related insights and strategies.

With a substantial group of students signed up and experienced visitors from creative centers like LA, Paris, London, Vienna, Bejing, Moscow and Helsinki among others, some of the convention's most useful moments will probably come through each participant's personal interactions.

Europareise features international networks listing over 170 member festivals. Attendees can check out current musical exports through bands and DJs from Austria, Canada, China, India, Japan, Korea, and Norway.

“c/o pop has a reputation for strong promotional vision," said All About Jazz correspondent Phil Woolever. “Whether you're an accomplished pro exploring new avenues or a college kid looking at careers, many panels have a lot to offer."

The eclectic locale of Cologne makes an inspired choice for such a progressive event. By the time the after parties wind down this weekend, everyone who participated should feel both well educated and entertained.
