May 1-2: The Angels of Shanghai Project presented by Bob James
Created by jazz legend Bob James after a 2003 trip to China, Angels of Shanghai" is comprised of 5 talented students from the Shanghai Conservatory of Music. James leads this phenomenal group in playing a beautiful and haunting mix of American Jazz and Chinese traditional music. Using instruments created centuries ago, including the er-hu (a two-string violin), the pipa (similar to a lute), guzheng (a cross between a harp & a zither), and the dizi (bamboo flutes), the students are creating an improvisational and wholly unique international sound. With the intentions of helping Americans get to know more about Chinese culture, James uses the universal power of music to cross borders and break international boundaries.
