ABOUT THE UNIVERSITY OF THE STREETS

In 1967 Muhammad Salahuddeen founded the University of the Streets [UOTS] on 7th Street and Avenue A, on the Lower East Side, Manhattan, to enrich the community with education & job training and also music and the arts. Known for its week-end late-night jazz jam sessions, many jazz luminaries were known to come by and jam During the 1970's UOTS obtained government grants to offer low-income community residents vocational training in plumbing, carpentry and electrical work and business and secretarial studies. Their training lives on in the theater they designed and constructed which continues, to date, to offer music instruction, house concerts, jazz vocal workshops, poetry series, theatrical readings and many other events. Jam Sessions and the Jazz Vocal Workshops continue, weekends and during the week. The space is available to the community to hold meetings and seminars, and for performing artists to rehearse and showcase their talent. Additionally, art studios are housed on the 5th floor and the Nisei Goju-Ryu Karate Dojo is housed on the 3rd floor of the UOTS and offers a complete curriculum in martial arts and physical culture.
