SAN FRANCISCO, CA - On January 26th, 2008, 7:30pm, Michael Manring, Edo Castro and Yves Carbonne will perform a combined concert as part of the Noe Valley Music Series. All three are accomplished composers, arrangers as well as innovative bassists - moving the use of the instrument far beyond it's usual role as an ensemble rhythm addition.

Michael Manring/Manthing Music - Gorka to experimental post-metal rockers Tim Alexander (Primus) and Alex Skolnick (Testament) to electro-pop pioneer Thomas Dolby. His long-term collaboration and close friendship with the late acoustic guitar genius Michael Hedges led to a lengthy stint as house bassist for Windham Hill Records; a label for whom he also worked as a solo artist, releasing four recordings under his own name: Unusual Weather (1986), Toward the Center of the Night (1989), Drastic Measures (1991) and Thonk (1994). These, along with his 1998 release The Book of Flame on the Alchemy record label earned him an international reputation as “a master of the fretless bass without rival." (Guitar Club Magazine, Italy). He has garnered two gold records, Grammy and Bammie nominations, a Berklee School of Music Distinguished Alumni Award, two Just Plain Folks Awards and numerous Bass Player Magazine Reader's Poll awards including 1994 Bassist of the Year. He was also the subject of a recent PBS TV documentary, The Artist's Profile: Michael Manring.

In his solo concerts Michael weaves together his musical influences into a tapestry rich with expression, virtuosity, humor and meaning. As one writer put it, “Michael Manring can do more with a bass than even the most creative individual could imagine" (L. Pierce Carson, Napa Valley Register).

Edo Castro/Passion Star Records - Accomplished composer and innovative bassist, Castro has a gift that transforms the sound of unique multi-stringed basses into a palate from which intricate compositions are drawn. Castro lures the listener to embark on an amazing and stirring journey. He has been described as “very expressive - from ethereal to grooving - great writing and playing;" and his fan base spans the globe. In the last 15 years, Castro has contributed to over 20 albums including two solo efforts released to wide acclaim: Edo (2001) and Phoenix (2006), a natural atmospheric expansion and evolutionary outgrowth of his debut release. Castro frequently finds himself sought after to perform and record with local Bay Area musicians, among them Ian Doogle, Deborah Winters, Jill Knight, Eva Jay Fortune, Paul Van Wageningen, Drew Youngs, Caroline Aiken, Dan Zinn, Michael La Macchia, Armando Peraza, Caren Armstrong, Percy Howard, Mike Molenda, Deborah Pardes, David Sobel, Stu Hamm, Lorn Leber, George Brooks, etc. During his tenure in Chicago he also had the pleasure of performing with David Amram, Mark Walker, Hassan Kahn, Pete Cosey, Roy Haynes, Fareed Haque, David Onderdonk, Nick Kitsos, Ed Thigpen, Johnny Griffin, Joe Sonnefeldt, Stu Greenspan, Bethany Pickens and Jim Trumpeter. Castro once sat in on a set with percussion legend Roy Haynes who later said “When you're in town, give me a call." Castro has appeared at the Chicago, Michigan Harvest, Mill Valley and SF North Beach Jazz Festivals.

Yves Carbonne/Alternity Records - What Carbonne delivers is the powerful rock solid, bass register with musical intuition that renews familiar conventions with a freshness and emotional intensity that at once seems as genuinely felt as it is intelligently composed. Carbonne hails from Paris, France and delivers a potent blend of jazz, R&B, progressive rock, and poignant and reflective spiritual music. Carbonne's early influences grew out of his fascination with international jazz greats, particularly Miles Davis, John McLaughlin, John Coltrane, and Jaco Pastorius. Like Pastorius, Carbonne came to focus on pioneering new tonalities and sonic qualities through his instrument. Deep in the pursuit of the instrument's sonic development, Carbonne became the first musician to perform on 10 and 12 stringed fretless sub-bass instruments including a Jerzy Drozd 12 string instrument featuring a new low B string tuned at an earth-moving 15.4 hertz!

Carbonne's recording and performing credits includes his debut CD, Seven Waves (2007) and a broad and eclectic assortment of jazz and progressive music luminaries, and a diverse cast of international musicians, among them Bernard Lubat, Archie Shepp, Hermeto Pasqual, Michel Portal, Michael Manring, Dominique DiPiazza, members of the Zawinul Syndicate Randy Bernsen and Roger Biwandu, Glenn Ferris, Uri Caine, Alain Caron, Manu Codjia and many others.
