We usually reserve this space for an upbeat preview of the issue's features. But several events have transpired recently that call for something a little more political(ly incorrect). Last month's cover story on John Scofield engendered some comments about whether we were a true jazz gazette featuring such an artist. Throughout our history, brief though it may be, there have been numerous individuals and factions deriding us for being too avant garde, or not enough, too populist or too obscure. Remarkably for music that, regardless of specific sub-genre, barely registers with the general public, listeners want to segment and sabotage it further. The most recent jazz news that has the 'community' buzzing is the awarding of the new MacArthur “genius grants". Two winners of direct relevance are saxophonist/composer John Zorn and violinist Regina Carter. If you haven't been part of the arguments for and against each and both, you can surely imagine the vehemence on both sides. A little further from home, in another marginalizing nail in jazz' coffin, the MOBO Awards (Music of Black Origin) in the United Kingdom, the decision was made this year to remove jazz from the award categories, either because there were not enough artists to represent a competition or because the BBC airing was too short to include it (both reasons were given). Whichever is true, so much for Europe being a safe haven for jazz. What can we at AllAboutJazz-New York do about it? Probably not much except ignore the naysayers and try to make ourselves as inclusive as possible, so maybe those fans of loud or soft, new or old, straight or avant garde, popular or unpopular, can meet in the middle and bring the battle to the right fronts.

So take a look at the new issue, with coverage given to Oliver Lake, Ben Riley and Marilyn Crispell, upstart label Mighty Quinn and Brooklyn hotspot Puppet's Jazz Club. There are a couple of national festival reports, a special feature on the museum that was once Louis Armstrong's house and enough CD reviews and concert listings to make anyone happy.

We can only hope...

Laurence Donohue-Greene & Andrey Henkin
