Asian Jazz All-Stars Power Quartet
The Asian Jazz All-Stars Power Quartet brings together—as the name suggests— four of Asia's leading jazz musicians—Singaporean pianist/organist Jeremy Monteiro, Philippine saxophonist Tots Tolentino, Hong Kong guitarist Eugene Pao and Thai drummer, Hong Chanutr Techatana-nan. The quartet is about to embark on its first tour outside Asia, following the launch last year of the electrifying Live at the Living Room Jazz Festival, Bangkok (Jazznote Records, 2011).

All About Jazz contributor Ian Patterson will be on the road with the Asian Jazz All-Stars Power Quartet from the 12th to the 25th November, beginning with rehearsals, workshops and warm-up gigs in Singapore and finishing with concerts in France.

In between, the Asian Jazz All-Stars Power Quartet will perform at the London Jazz Festival in the Pizza Express Jazz Club, Dean Street, on Sunday 18th November. This is an all too rare opportunity for the capital’s jazz fans to see some of Asia’ very best jazz musicians performing their powerful, electro-acoustic jazz fusion, which draws inspiration from the Larry Goldings/Peter Bernstein/Bill Stewart trio.

Between them, the members of the Asian Jazz All-Stars Power Quartet have played and recorded with a who’s who of modern jazz, including pianists Chick Corea and Herbie Hancock, saxophonists James Moody, Jackie McLean, Ernie Watts and Michael Brecker, harmonica player Toots Thielemans, guitarists Joe Pass and Dan Phillips , drummers Jack DeJohnette and Bill Bruford, bassists Charlie Haden and Eldee Young, flautist Herbie Mann, not to mention singer/songwriting legends Simon & Garfunkel.

All About Jazz will find out what it’s like for an Asian jazz band to tour Europe, and will throw the spotlight on some of the current issues facing Asian jazz musicians, from the challenges of getting gigs abroad to perceptions of Asian jazz. AAJ will also be getting the latest news on the growth of jazz in Asia, from Thailand to China, and from Malaysia and the Philippines to Indonesia and beyond.

So, for the nuts and bolts of the Asian Jazz All-Star Power Quartet’s tour, and the bigger picture of jazz in Asia, check it out, exclusively at All About Jazz.
