Los Angeles Music Academy College of Music, that partnered recently with jazz vocalist Al Jarreau to offer a vocal scholarship in his name, today announced Ethiopia's Nefthalem Mulat was the first student to be awarded the prestigious scholarship. Jarreau, a seven-time Grammy Award winning jazz vocalist, provides one scholarship per semester to attend LA Music Academy; Nefthalem beat out scores of other applicants.

“Nethalem stood out from the pack thanks to a strong musical background and thorough application. We were impressed by Nefthalem's East Africa Music Award nomination for singing with the Mekrez Choir as well as his broad musical experience performing on piano, saxophone and the traditional Ethiopian string instrument known as the Kirar. He demonstrated outstanding performance capabilities and exceptional musical talent, ability and enthusiasm," says Jarreau.

“What a fantastic opportunity for aspiring vocal students to be recognized by one of the biggest and most iconic names in jazz," says Tom Aylesbury, president of LA Music Academy. “We are excited to assist Nethalem's musical journey and prepare him for the next level of a professional music career."

Jarreau, who tours the world extensively, visits LA Music Academy as guest lecturer and visiting artist. The school's vocal department is co-chaired by Tierney Sutton and Kathleen Grace, with Dorian Holley serving as Artist Development Director. LA Music Academy offers merit-based scholarships through each of its Bass, Drums, Vocal, Guitar and Music Production Departments. “In addition to the coveted $20,700 Charles T. Aylesbury Memorial Scholarship and the Al Jarreau Vocal Scholarship ($13,800)," says Aylesbury, “each department awards an 'outstanding' performance scholarship and several other performance scholarships, valued from $1,000 to $10,000."

The Academy is known for the personal attention that students receive from instructors and its warm and welcoming campus in Pasadena, which is central to many of the entertainment hotspots in Los Angeles.
