Mr. Diego draws obvious comparisons to Kenny G and David Sandborn because of his smooth jazz chops. However, his ability to fuse gospel, pop and urban flavors into his sound presents the listener with a unique vibe. It is quite rare for an artist to infuse genres as diverse as these hip hop rhythmic patterns ans still stay loyal to his jazz roots.
A New Beginning begins with a Kenny G feel with a funky R&B groove on “Everything's Going to Be Alright". Mr. Diego's fluid, soulful melody accents perfectly the tasteful new- soul vocals. This is an instant smooth groove classic. When listening closely, the listener will the influence of his mentor and previous recording partner jazz great Kirk Whalum.
On “Rib Sandwich", Mr. Diego enlists the help of friend and blues man Lucky Peterson. This is right out of the James Brown playbook...if the Godfather of Soul had dabbled in smooth jazz. The soulful guitar and vocals from Mr. Peterson is a certifiably funky crossover hit.
A New Beginning promises to be just that for saxophone specialist Don Diego. However, with melodies and pop hooks like these, Mr. Diego seems destined to continue on the skyward path established Billboard hit “Razz".
