A mind-blowing free double bill:
Fiesta Cubana with Los Van Van and Afro-Cuban All-Stars, followed by Ben Harper & Relentless7!
Montreal, Thursday, June 4, 2009 - Closing out an amazing 30th edition with a big bang, the Festival International de Jazz de Montral invites fans to a festive, technicolour Rio Tinto Alcan 30th Anniversary Closing Event on Sunday, July 12. The Rio Tinto Alcan stage (formerly the main stage facing the Place des Arts forecourt) lights up at 7 p.m. with the fiery Fiesta Cubana, presented in collaboration with XM Satellite Radio. At 9:30 p.m., it’s time to head over to the Place des Festivals, where the General Motors stage hosts the ever-popular and powerful Ben Harper & Relentless7. This free outdoor mega double-bill promises a superb closing to these exceptional 30th anniversary Festival celebrations!
The Fiesta Cubana Grand Event gets rolling with the Afro-Cuban All Stars, under the musical direction of Juan de Marcos Gonzalez, presenting faves and classics from the Cuban repertoire, as well as new songs. Then, legendary Cuban group Los Van Van, nicknamed “The Rolling Stones of salsa”, turn the outdoor site into an evening-long dance party! Viva Cuba-a country at the epicentre of Festival musical discoveries since Year One!
Missed them at Metropolis in May? No worries-incredibly, Ben Harper and his Relentless7 return for a massive free show! Friends since the late ’90s, Ben Harper and guitarist Jason Mozersky got together with drummer Jordan Richardson and bassist Jesse Ingalls in 2005, during the recording of a track for the excellent Both Sides of the Gun, thereby giving birth to Relentless7. In early May, they came out with White Lies for Dark Times, Harper’s 9th album, a timeless and resolutely rocking release. For this very special evening, a major Festival favourite and his band will focus all the intoxicating power of their genuine American rock'n'roll to close out an incredible 30th anniversary!
Thanks to the support of Industry Canada, and its other public and private partners, the Festival is able to present more free outdoor events for this 30th edition, including this exciting double bill, thereby increasing the city’s appeal as a tourist attraction-especially during the current economic crisis-and enhancing its international profile.
The 30th edition of the Festival International de Jazz de Montreal will run from June 30 to July 12, 2009.
