In anticipation of the group's February 22nd concert at The Stone, Time Out New York wrote, Reedist Matt Bauder, bassist Zach Wallace and percussionist Aaron Siegel have honed a handsome improv aesthetic since their collaboration began a decade ago. The trio's crystalline drones and patient, chamberlike interplay offer a subtle alternative to turbulent free jazz." The group defines itself as a balance of open forms and structured investigations, noises and notes," and describes the music on Memorize The Sky as textural bricks of sound juxtaposed with lyrical melody-driven meditations."
Bauder, Wallace and Siegel first met in Ann Arbor, Michigan and since the late 1990's they have toured the Unites States and Europe as a collective entity, despite living in three different cities. They consider their continuing collaboration an ongoing composition that fleshes out its own aesthetic through improvisation. In addition to its recording with Braxton, Memorize The Sky has released three 3" CD singles and appeared on numerous compilations. The group has also collaborated with musicians such as Josh Abrams, Jim Baker, Jeb Bishop, Greg Davis, Greg Kelly, Fred Lonberg-Holm, Rob Mazurek, Sean Meehan, Phil Minton, Jason Roebke, Scott Rosenberg and Ken Vandermark. The release of Memorize The Sky follows the group's April tour of Germany and Austria.
