NATIONAL ENDOWMENT FOR THE ARTS TO ANNOUNCE THE 2007 NEA JAZZ MASTERS AT WASHINGTON PERFORMING ARTS SOCIETY'S SEASON PREMIER

Announcement will be part of October 6 Duke Ellington Jazz Festival concert at historic Lincoln Theatre in Downtown DC

Washington, DC - The audience at the October 6, 2006 concert opening the Washington Performing Arts Society's new season will be the first to learn the names of the 2007 NEA Jazz Masters. The concert features two jazz legends - NEA Jazz Masters Paquito D'Rivera ('05) and Roy Haynes ('95) - who will share a double bill as part of the Duke Ellington Jazz Festival.

The NEA Jazz Master Award, the nation's highest honor in jazz, is a lifetime achievement award given annually by the NEA to artists and one advocate who have made exceptional contributions to jazz. The award includes a one-time award of $25,000. Since 1982, the NEA has designated 94 great figures in American music as NEA Jazz Masters.

This year, NEA Chairman Dana Gioia will make the announcement during the concert at the historic Lincoln Theatre in Washington, D.C. Paquito D'Rivera will perform with his United Nation Orchestra while Roy Hayes will play with his quartet.
