1st International Jarek Smietana Jazz Guitar Competition - Closing Date For Applications 15 April

My Polish Heart Foundation is proud to announce the inaugural International Jarek Śmietana Jazz Guitar Competition, which will be held in Cracow from 1-4 July, 2015.

The International Jarek Śmietana Jazz Guitar Competition is in honor of Jarek Śmietana, one of the most significant figures in Polish jazz for over four decades, who passed away on 2 September 2013 after a long fight with a brain tumor.

The competition is open to guitarists form any country up to the age of 35 promoting jazz/improvised music, on electric and/or acoustic guitar. First prize is worth $10,000 to the winner.

The jury for the first International Jarek Śmietana Jazz Guitar Competition is comprised of John Abercrombie, Ed Cherry, Prof. Karol Ferfecki, Mike Stern, Marek Napiórkowski and Wojciech Karolak. The Chariman of the Jury is Witold Wnuk, initiator of the International Jarek Śmietana Jazz Guitar Competition and a respected international music impresario.

Jarek Śmietana was a charismatic band leader, originator of uncountable activities and projects, a great composer and arranger. He left behind dozens of albums, including over 30 as leader.

As a leader of his own bands, he performed and recorded with giants of American jazz, including: Art Farmer, Freddie Hubbard, Eddie Henderson, Joe Zawinul, Jerry Goodman, Gary Bartz, Vince Mendoza, John Abercrombie, Idris Muhammad, Bennie Maupin, Mike Stern and Cameron Brown, amongst others.

Over a forty year career Śmietana performed and recorded with many of the leading figures in Polish jazz, including the great vilonist Zbigniew Seifert.
